                 PresenteD by dr. Karen Pierce, PHD                                               Dr. Pierce is co-director of the university of california-san diego (UCSD) autism center of excellence (ace) and a professor at ucsd's neurosciences department. Dr. Pierce has been studying autism for the past 20 years and is a leading expert on the neural and clinical phenotype of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The attendee will be able to:
1. Discuss at least two modalities in the assessment process of a child with probable Autism Spectrum Disorder.
2. Describe how the “eye gaze” examination is utilized to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder.
3. State how Sleep f MRI is utilized as a research tool to study functional brain development.

Free Mental Health First Aid training
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour certified public education program that introduces participants to risk factors, warning
signs and symptoms of specific types of illnesses such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bipolar, and schizophrenia;
builds understanding of their impact, and teaches a five step action plan to support someone developing an emotional crisis.

The Judy Beck scholarship, created from donations to CSNO- SDI Section, awards an SDI school nurse who's furthering his/her education in areas pertinent to the practice of school health services.

The Joanne Gill Scholarship was established in her honor by
her husband, Judge David Gill. Joanne was passionate on the value and importance of ongoing learning.

President's Message
NOW is the time to sign up or renew your CSNO membership – for the annual year that began July 1, 2017 and continues through June 30, 2018. Take advantage of the $99 reduced rate (after September 30th the rate will increase to $125).  Students and Retired school nurses can take advantage of the reduced rate of $50 whenever they join. Encourage non-nurse members of your school health team to also join CSNO. For more information about different levels of membership, join up on line or to print a membership form go to:

 Join today and also take advantage of our two upcoming section professional offerings (contact hours provided): September 28th 4:00 – 6:00 Mini-Conference “My Tummy Hurts” and October 21st 8:30- 1:30 Fall Conference “How THIS Impacts your School Nursing Practice”.
 Recruiting Reward$ are again being offered. As a CSNO member, recruit one or more new member(s) and be entered into a drawing for a free state conference registration.  One winner from each section will be selected. Each new member recruited that lists you as the individual who recruited them increases your chances!  New members make sure that you add the name of the person that recruited you – so that they can get credit for doing so. This offer ends November 1, 2017.
